My prayers and thoughts are with the family of Coach Brittain. I had the pleasure of playing at Rider for Coach Brittain. He treated all players whether you were the star athlete or just one of the players with respect and made you feel good about yourself. He gave me my first coaching job at Vernon and taught me there was more to coaching than X and O. He was the one who set the bar for my coaching career high and treated me like one of his family, He was more than a coach a great roll model.
Love,
to his family,

As the first female sports editor in North Texas, I didn't know what to expect. I remember the first day I went to the Vernon Lion fieldhouse, I was a little worried about how I would be received as the new Vernon Daily Record sports editor. But I started asking Coach Brittain questions about the upcoming 1977 season, and he didn't hesitate to provide answers. I left that initial interview thinking maybe this job's going to work out after all. And that's the real answer he gave me that day. After the football banquet at the end of my first season with the Lions, I asked Coach Brittain what he thought when I showed up at his office that first day. He said he didn't know if I even knew what a football was and we laughed. I covered two more Lion football seasons after that. I'll always appreciate that he was willing to give a woman novice sports reporter the benefit of the doubt.

Coach Brittain distinguished himself in the coaching arena by not only being someone who could inspire and motivate his players, but more importantly one who was an outstanding role model in his actions as well as speech. When Coach Brittain spoke, players listened. My condolences to his wonderful family.

There will never be enough words to describe the man Leo Brittain was to so many people. He was a mentor on and off the field, and Vernon was blessed to have him be a part of our community for so long. He made his mark on so many lives, and will be truly missed. Love your family, may God wrap his arms around you all and give you comfort and peace until we meet him again someday!! Proud to have known him, Karin and the kids! Blessed

Coach,
I had the pleasure of being coached by you two years at Rider. Then I had the displeasure of playing you when I became a head coach. You beat us every time. Thank you for being so helpful on my visits with you about offensive line play and strength & conditioning training. You were a great coach, tough competitor, and one of the best men I knew. My thoughts and prayers a are with your family.

Coach Brittain was a second father to many of us that played for him. He was a true leader, mentor, and inspiration. A mountain of a man with a huge heart. I will always be grateful to him and his entire family for allowing me to be a small part of their lives. Thanks Coach for everything.

A true mentor to so many young men. Coach Britain not only taught us how to play and excel at football but also in life. One of his beliefs was “the desire to win is useless without the desire to prepare.” He prepared us for life and will be missed by so many. May God’s comfort and peace be with all the family during this difficult time.
