A happy, loving, positive Christian man, husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, Merlin Burlison died at his office Monday morning, February 13, 2017. Merlin many times mentioned that his father worked up to the day he died. When asked how long he was going to work, he always answered that, like his father, he wanted to work up to the day he died. That is what happened. He was within two weeks of his 83rd birthday.
Born on February 27, 1934 in Dallas, Texas, the first child of A.B. (Hap) and Berna Dean Burlison. He graduated from WFHS and SMU, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Upon graduation Merlin enlisted in the Air Force, was a Captain and Navigator. It was while in the service that he met and fell in love with Claudette in Lake Charles, Louisiana They were married there in August 1961 and returned to Wichita Falls where Merlin was working in the family business, Burlison Packing Company. Merlin was with the packing house for 16 years before starting his own accounting firm, Management Services. The firm has been in business for over 40 years.
Merlin was a man of many loves. He dearly loved his family and Claudette, his loving wife for 55 years. His grandchildren were very special to him. They called him “Magic”, the clever name he chose. They had great times together at their lake home on Lake Nocona, which was appropriately known as “Magic’s Kingdom.”
Merlin loved the Lord which led and motivated him to teach the 50/50 Sunday School class at Floral Heights United Methodist Church for 50 years including this year.
Merlin loved playing tennis, watching tennis on TV which took priority because he managed the remote controls. High on his bucket list was to go to the US Open in New York, which Merlin and Claudette enjoyed a few years ago.
Merlin loved being with people, sharing stories and having a good time. The lunch bunch of guys on Thursday at Luby’s Cafeteria was one of those regular times. When Merlin was around you knew it – everybody knew it. He had the most infectious laugh that was full of feelings, joy and happiness.
Merlin loved spending time with the Burlison families, his family, his children and their families as often as he could. He was a family man, who knew the importance of the family and being together.
Merlin served on the board of Floral Heights United Methodist Church and was treasurer for the Children’s Aid Society and Child Evangelism. He was Member of the Public Accountants, Metropolitan Club, President of the Petroleum Accountants Society and other associations.
